In these 3-day tours, we will walk into families who still live in tulou clusters, share stories and photos of clusters. Your tour guide is a person who is known for wealth of knowledge of Tulou and passion for working on protection of traditional Chinese architecture, understands local history and culture, and treats himself/herself as a family memeber who lives in Tulou.

Xiamen to Chuxi Tulou Cluster in Yongding

You will be picked up from your hotel in Xiamen, or cruise terminal, or airport at 08:30 and transferred to Chuxi in Yongding. It takes 3 hours on the road from Xiamen. Visit the villages in Chuxi Tulou. Stay overnight in Yuqinglou, a hotel located in the traditional Tulou Cluster.
Chuxi Tulou Cluster: Chuxi Tulou Cluster is UNESCO World Heritage site 1113-001. Located in Chuxi village, Xiayang township. Chuxi is the most remote area in this province. Please be ready for simple hotel facility and no entertainment at night.
In Chuxi Village, there are five round clusters and many square clusters, scatted on mountains. A small path made of cobblestones links these clusters. Behind the buildings are terraced hills and dense forests. The most well-known clusters are Jiqinglou, Yuqinglou, Gengqinglou, Shengqinglou, Shanqinglou and, Xiqinglou.
Yuqinglou: Three massive round clusters are situated near the entrance of Chuxi village, Yuqinglou is the one on the left. It was firlst built in 1900. Last renovation was in 2010. The house owner Mr. Xu turned it into a family-runned hotel, simply facilities for bed and breakfast. Some rooms have shower and toilet, many rooms do not have, you need to go to the first floor for public toilet. Rooms are quite clean anyway. It is quite an experience to live there.

Chuxi Tulou Cluster to Nanxi Tulou Cluster to HongKeng Tulou Cluster

In the morning, you will take a walk around Chuxi village to see local people's activities. You will then be transferred to the Nanxi Tulou Clusters. Visit Zhenchenglou in Hongkeng village in the afternoon. We will stay overnight in Fuyulou cluster.
Nanxi Tulou clusters: The name is applied to a section of the Nanxi Valley in Hukeng Town, which for a distance of several kilometers is almost continuously built up with tulous. For its striking visual effect, the area is referred to by some authors as the "Tulou Great Wall". One of the tulou is Yanxiang Lou, a round tulou in Xinnan Village figures on the World Heritage List as Site 1113-004. We will have a local hakka lunch in Yanxianglou cluster,
Zhenchenglou Cluster: Located in Hongkeng village, Hukeng township of Yongding County. Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage 1113-002. It was built in 1912 by the descendents of a rich tobacco merchant. Zhenchenglou is a double ring tulou, its outer ring is four storeys high, total 184 rooms, the inner ring is two storeys with 32 rooms. The outer ring was partitioned into four segments according to Bagua concept of Chinese Fengshui.
Fuyulou Cluster: It is located in a traditional 130 years old Hakka architecture of Fuyulou Cluster, originally 160 rooms. The villager renovated 20 rooms with simple facilities of bed and breakfast. The rooms are clean and tidy. The cluster is quite near the famous Zhenchenglou Cluster. After the crowd of tourists leaves, you will find out the life in cluster keep the same way as hundreds of years ago.

Gaobei Tulou Cluster to Nanjing to Xiamen

In the morning, you will visit the nearby Gaobei Clusters. You will then be driven to Nanjing county, where you will visit Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster. Visit Hakka families in the villages. You will head back to Xiamen in the late afternoon. You should arrive back to your hotel in Xiamen at 7:00PM.
Gaobei Clusters: Gaobei village is 15 minute drive from Hongkeng. The main cluster you will visit is Chengqilou, nicknamed "the King of Tulou". It was built in 1709 and enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
Chengqilou Cluster
It is massive round tulou with four concentric rings surrounding an ancestral hall at the center, the outer ring is 62.6 metres in diameter and four storeys tall, 288 rooms, with 72 rooms on each level, circular corridor on 2nd to 4th floor, with four sets of staircases at cardinal points connecting ground to top floors.
The ground floor rooms are kitchens for family branches, the second level rooms are grain storage rooms, and the 3rd and 4th floor rooms are living quarters and bedrooms.
The second ring of 80 rooms is two storeys high, with 40 rooms on each level,
The third ring served as community library, one storey with 32 rooms; there are 370 rooms in all.
The 4th ring is a circular covered corridor surrounding the ancestral hall.
Chengqilou has two main gates and two side gates. 15th generation Jiang clan with 57 families and 300 people live here. At its heyday, there were more than 80 family branches lived in Chengqilou.
Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster: On July 7, 2008, Tianluokeng tulou cluster was inscribed as one of Fujian's Tulou World Heritage Sites. Compared with clusters in Hongkeng and Gaobei, Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster is not so polluted by toursim.
The cluster consists of a square earth building at the center of a quincunx, surrounded by four round earth buildings
The five earth buildings are:
1. The square earth building named Buyun building(Reaching the Cloud building) at the center of the quincunx. It was the first earth building at this site, built in 1796. It is three storeys high, each storey has 26 rooms, four sets of stairs, and a circular corridor in front of the rooms. The Buyun building was burnt down by bandits in 1936, and rebuilt in 1953 according to the original shape.
2. The Hechang building, a three-storey-high round earth building,
3. Zhenchang building, three storeys, round shape, 26 rooms per storey, built in 1930
4. Ruiyun building, built in 1936, three storeys, 26 rooms per floor.
5. The oval shape Wenchang building of 1966, three storeys, 32 rooms per floor.
